Europe increasingly expulsive: the Migration and Asylum Pact launched by the EU is costly and cruel

After nine years of negotiations, MEPs on Wednesday 10 adopted a set of texts on reception and asylum procedures that further hardens the management of migration movements. “The 27 adopt the agenda of the far right. Migrants and refugees are painted as enemies to be defended against.”  (Source: Le Monde, 04/14/2024).

From jurists to nongovernmental organizations, from the Church to geopolitical experts: all reject the new rules.

Defeat for Italy, because the Dublin regulation remains in force: the country of first arrival will have to take charge of all asylum application procedures and the others will “sponsor” the return to the countries of departure.

Solidarity between member countries only voluntary, migrants will be detained and subjected to “screening” at the Union’s external borders including increased detention (as if to say green light to “migrant lagers”).

Amnesty International first turns the spotlight on the risk of human rights violations. “It is clearer than ever that this Pact will set back European asylum law by decades, exposing many more people at every stage of their journey to great suffering,” said Eve Geddie, director of Amnesty International’s European Institutions Office (Source: avvenire.it). The pact risks exposing especially the most fragile, such as women and children “to the risk of de facto detention at the borders of the European Union.”

New EU migration rules make it mandatory for EU border guards to collect biometric data from undocumented migrants over the age of six, even allowing “proportionate coercion” if a child resist!!!!

WE MAKE OUR OWN THE WORDS OF MONSIGNOR GRANFRANCO PEREGO PRESIDENT OF THE
CEI’s MIGRANTES FOUNDATION.

“The European Pact on Migrants Asylum Seekers and Refugees, approved today at the European Parliament in Brussels, should have changed the Dublin rules, facilitating international protection in Europe of people fleeing from environmental disasters, wars, victims of trafficking and exploitation, people crushed by misery, with a solidarity commitment of all EU member countries in reception […].

Instead, Europe – while tragedies continue in the Mediterranean – by majority vote closes in on itself, neglects the dramas of fleeing migrants, replaces real reception with a cash payment.

The European Pact on Migrants Asylum Seekers and Refugees thus marks a drift in European asylum policy and the failure of European solidarity, which seems to crash like waves against the barges of hope […].

We trust that Article 10 of our Constitution will remain as a safe guard to protect asylum seekers […].”
