Nobel Peace Prize to Iranian Narges Mohammadi. Even from prison she fights against the oppression of women and for human rights

Twenty years after lawyer Shirin Ebadi, 51-year-old activist and journalist Narges Mohammadi became the second Iranian to receive the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize. Both members of the Centre for Human Rights Defenders, founded by Shirin Ebadi, the two women embody the increasingly determined struggle of Iranian women for their rights.

The Nobel Committee said that over the past 25 years, ‘Narges Mohammadi’s courageous struggle has come at enormous personal cost. The Iranian regime has arrested her 13 times, sentenced her five times to a total of 31 years in prison and 153 lashes’. (Source: Panorama.co.uk)

First arrested 22 years ago, she has spent most of the last two decades in and out of prison. She has not seen her children for eight years, refugees in France with their father, and recognises that there is no immediate prospect of release. She was last imprisoned in November 2021. However, she insists that her struggle is worthwhile, saying that the protest movement that broke out a year ago in Iran is still alive.

The protests were triggered in September 2022 after the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old young woman detained by Iran’s notorious vice police.

The images of Iranian women setting fire to their headscarves and chanting ‘women, life, freedom’ have conquered the world, but women continue to pay with their lives: the assault on 16-year-old Armita Geravand in the metro, who was put into a coma because she was guilty of not wearing a headscarf, is a recent incident. Meanwhile, her mother has been arrested.
