OVERSHOOT DAY 2023
In the days when planet Earth is registering the highest temperatures since we began measuring them some two hundred years ago, experts tell us that as of today we have exhausted the Planet’s supplies for the year 2023. Admittedly, a slight improvement over recent years… but still far from the sustainability and collective responsibility required to ensure the lives of future generations.
The recent approval by the Council of Europe of the Nature Restoration Act alone is not enough, but it marks and legitimises a path of true ecological transition that slows down the momentum of the denialist and anti-European right-wingers. The survival of humanity depends on healthy ecosystems.
The Nature Restoration Law is just one piece of the larger 1 trillion plan unveiled in 2019 – the Green Deal – which aims to reach net zero emissions by 2050 through a series of laws and packages.

According to data provided by the European Commission, restoring biodiversity-rich habitats is expected to cost around 154 billion euros at the European level. While the resulting benefits in terms of ecosystem services (soil health, climate regulation, water purification, food production) would be around EUR 1,860 billion.
Europe has sent a clear message by siding with the right side of the fight against the climate-environmental crisis, in favour of the Planet. The law, which falls under the umbrella of the 2030 Biodiversity Strategy as part of the European Green Deal, is the formal tool to work towards securing ecosystems, creating the preconditions for a brighter future for us and for generations to come.
