Nelson Mandela International Day
Nelson Mandela handed the world a great legacy from a lifetime of service to the anti-apartheid struggle, the regime established in South Africa in 1948 on the premise of white superiority and racial oppression.
Mandela Day is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and dynasty. It is a global movement to honour his life’s work and take action to change the world for the better. Nelson Mandela International Day was called to commemorate his birthday on 18 July 1989 by unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly. It was inspired by an exhortation Mandela had made a year earlier for a new generation to take up the baton against the world’s social injustices, with the words. “It is in your hands now”.
