Today our Sister Aguchita is finally among the Blessed
Great celebration in Peru and throughout
the Congregation for the recognition of the extraordinary vocation of Sister Agustina Rivas Lopez, martyr of mercy.
The announcement was made on 22 May last year by Pope Francis, who recognised the martyrdom of our sister Aguchita, killed by the Sendero Luminoso guerrillas on 27 September 1990, together with six villagers.
Aguchita spent most of her life in the Amazon rainforest, in the Peruvian Andes, which is why Fides Agency (the information organ of the Pontifical Mission Societies) called her 'the missionary martyr who gave her life for the Amazon and for the human rights of its peoples'.
The Pan-American Ecclesial Network (REPAM), in coordination with the Catholic Association of Latin American and Caribbean Communication (SIGNIS), made a short documentary entitled "Aguchita", which is part of the series "La Vida por la Amazonía".
Today, more than ever, we inspire our actions with the radical witness of love for the poor and oppressed. LET US CONTINUE YOUR STRUGGLE FOR DIGNITY AND THE DEFENCE OF HUMAN RIGHTS!
