Women wearing red scarves arrive in Italy, as chaos erupts in Kabul

A red handkerchief around their wrist to quickly recognise each other, to stay united among the thousands of people trying to catch one of the flights of hope. This is how the carabinieri rescue the women activists supported by Italian NGOs.

It took them three days, three nights, the risk of crossing Kabul, the tricks to get to the airport, the pushing, the beating, the crushing.

Among them was Amina, the girl with the covered face who had launched her cry of pain for all Afghan women through desperate messages from her cellar.
