World day against child labour exploitation
152 million children are still victims
Established in 2002 by the ILO (United Nations International Labour Organisation) to draw attention to the widespread occurrence of child labour, it aims to encourage renewed efforts to eliminate the worst forms of economic exploitation of children….especially this year: the ILO has declared 2021 the International Year against Child Labour.
The ILO estimates that nearly 100 million children have been freed from child labour in the last 20 years. However, progress in different regions of the world is uneven. According to recent ILO estimates, there are still 152 million children – 68 million are girls and 88 million are boys – who are victims of child labour. Half of them are forced into hazardous work activities that put their health, safety and moral development at risk.
