20 February 2021 – International Day of Social Justice
Social justice is also intergenerational justice
It is an anniversary that we have been celebrating since 2009 at the initiative of the UN.
Social justice is a fundamental principle for peaceful coexistence between and within nations. Promoting it is not simply a matter of raising incomes and creating jobs. It is also about the rights, dignity and freedom of expression of working men and women, as well as economic, social and political empowerment.
The key message is that social justice is achieved by removing all barriers of gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion and culture.
We uphold the principles of social justice when we promote gender equality and the rights of indigenous peoples and migrants, and when we remove barriers people face because of their gender, age, ethnicity, religion, culture or disability.
Today we continue our commitment to social justice starting with the Congregation’s Position Statements which call for special attention to the rights of future generations.
Today, social justice also urges us to seek a more ‘just’ measure of our actions and to put into circulation widespread responsibilities to make peace with each other, with the Earth and with future generations.
